WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — The latest installment of this pictorial history series takes us to a 1956 view of a gathering of trail riders at Reed's Farm on West Street. The group is posed in front of the Reed Barn, which was built around the mid-1800s.

One of the few brick barns still in existence, the structure contained two levels, with farmers unloading feed on the upper level, where it could be easily dropped to the animals below. Other unique features of the barn are a border along the top of the brickwork, as well as doorway arches.

Phyllis (Quagliaroli) Shopbell, a former Windsor Locks resident who moved to California more than six decades ago, submitted this photo to the Historical Society. She was an expert horsewoman who raised Morgans for many years, and her dad Jack owned Park Chevrolet in Windsor Locks.

Amazingly, very little has changed with the barn in the nearly 70 years since this photo was taken, as evidenced by this contemporary shot, actually taken this morning.
