EAST WINDSOR, CT — A detour established in the fall on a segment of Route 191 in Broad Brook, originally expected to be taken down for a time this winter before construction work resumes on the Stiles Bridge, will instead remain in effect through Nov. 10.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) said the $9.1 million construction project was initially designed to temporarily reopen the roadway during the winter after utility relocations. However, it has now been deemed necessary for the roadway to remain closed for the entire duration of the project.

Detours on Route 191 are established at Mahoney Road. Northbound traffic is detoured to Route 5 north, then right onto Route 140 east. Southbound motorists are being detoured to Route 140 west, then left onto Route 5 south, according to the DOT.

The construction project consists of replacing the bridge with a steel beam, reinforced cast in place concrete deck superstructure on top of precast abutment stems that rest on cast in place footings with deep foundations. Additionally, the road profile will be raised about four feet, according to the DOT.

Awarded to ROTHA Contracting Co. at a cost of $9,077,089.26 on Sept. 11, 2023, the contract for the project says it will require two construction seasons to complete the work. The first construction season was required to relocate all utilities, and the bridge and approach roadway work will be completed in the second season, according to the DOT.
