“On this day honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I extend my appreciation to those who, year after year, maintain a steadfast commitment to promoting the ideals for which he stood. On this day, as we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King., people are extending the hand of friendship to others throughout Wilmington and around the country by participating in a variety of community projects. This is consistent with Dr. King’s civil rights “call to action,” which includes abolishing racial discrimination, creating new employment opportunities, preserving voting rights, and improving access educational opportunities for all. That very meaningful ‘to do’ list is as relevant today as it was when Dr. King was alive. This is a special day indeed. It is a day that inspires the best in us. And it is one that should set the tone for our actions throughout the year and into the future until change finally comes, as Dr. King always said it would. Thank you for all that you do for yourselves, your families, and for each other.”
