📰 News we're reading

1. Burglary Call Leads to Swift Arrest on Wilmington Streets (mychesco.com) — Wilmington officers responding to a reported burglary in progress on North Walnut Street quickly circulated suspect descriptions and soon detained a 32-year-old Dover woman nearby. Police say she now faces attempted burglary, conspiracy, and criminal mischief charges after being arraigned and released. Investigators are still looking into the incident and a second possible suspect.

2. Police Seize Crack Cocaine, Cash in Morning Drug Arrest in Wilmington (mychesco.com) — Wilmington police say a Thursday morning drug investigation on Kirkwood Street led to the arrest of a 44-year-old city man and the seizure of suspected crack cocaine and cash. Officers later searched a vehicle on East 9th Street, recovered additional evidence, and filed multiple felony drug and related charges. The investigation remains active, and all charges are allegations.

3. Abigail Ticknor qualifies for Junior Gold bowling championships, again (theeveningenterprise.com) — A young bowler just earned a national championship berth at Pleasant Hill Lanes in Wilmington, putting a local bowling center in the spotlight. Twelve-year-old Abigail Ticknor of Millington qualified for the 2026 Junior Gold Championships by topping unqualified U14 competitors in a tough six-game series. She’ll head to Minneapolis next July after previously competing in Green Bay.

4. ‘Motorcycle Santa' roars into St. Elizabeth School to bring holiday cheer to sick children, their families: Video, photo gallery (thedialog.org) — Students at Wilmington’s St. Elizabeth School lined Cedar Street to welcome “Motorcycle Santa,” a local alum who now leads a toy drive benefiting Nemours Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. The former Wilmington bartender and dozens of partner businesses helped students load toys and toiletries onto his sleigh, turning a rainy December day into a high-energy celebration of giving.

5. Delaware lawmakers file measures seeking airline accountability in deportation flights (delawarepublic.org) — Lawmakers are targeting airlines operating from Wilmington’s airport, proposing to revoke state fuel tax breaks if carriers run deportation flights without due process. The measures, focused partly on Avelo Airlines, also urge the Delaware River and Bay Authority to scrutinize contracts with companies involved in such flights. The bills could reshape how Wilmington’s airport partners with airlines in the future.
