Execution Set For Convicted Rapist, Murderer At FL Prison: Report

FLORIDA — For the first time since October, a Florida man convicted of raping a 21-year-old woman and beating to death her 18-year-old brother in 1994 is set to be executed next month, the Associated Press reported.

Florida Department of Corrections records show Loran K. Cole, 57, was sentenced to death on Feb. 18, 1994 after being convicted of first-degree murder in Marion County.

Cole and a friend were accused of taking the siblings, who were in college at the time, to a pond after becoming friends with them in the Ocala National Forest, the Associated Press reported.

While there, Cole and his friend were accused of jumping and robbing the siblings - leaving the brother beaten in the forest and taking the sister to a campsite, the Associated Press reported, citing court records.

They then were accused of tying up and raping the woman, who was able to escape and get help from a driver, the Associated Press reported.

"Police found her brother’s body lying face down on the ground with head trauma and a slit throat, according to court records," the news outlet reported.

In addition to his murder conviction, Cole was also convicted and sentenced to life in prison on suspicion of two counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery with a gun or deadly weapon and two counts of sexual battery with a weapon or force, according to DOC records.

A lethal injection was set on Aug. 28 for Cole at the Florida State Prison after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the death warrant Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Michael Zack III, 54, convicted in the 1996 killing of two women, was the last person to be put to death in Florida, the news outlet reported.
