FL’s Top 20 Public High Schools Ranked By U.S. News

School for Advanced Studies topped the list of Florida public schools and ranked No. 3 in the nation, followed by Pine View in Sarasota Co.

FLORIDA — Eleven public high schools in Florida were ranked among the top 100 2023-24 Best High Schools nationwide, released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

Families can use the annual rankings to compare schools at the national, state and local levels on factors such as academic performance, graduation rates and college readiness, according to a news release. U.S. News reviewed 25,000 schools and ranked 17,680 of them.

Here are the top 20 public high schools in Florida (the first number represents the state ranking; the second in parentheses is the national ranking):

1. School for Advanced Studies, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami (#3)

3. Archimedean Upper Conservatory Charter School, Miami (#41)

4. Westshore Junior/Senior High School, Melbourne, Brevard Public Schools (#43)

5. Marine Academy of Science and Technology,North Miami, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (#46)

6. Suncoast Community High School, Riviera Beach, The School District of Palm Beach County (#70)

7. Edgewood Jr/Sr High School, Merritt Island, Brevard Public Schools (#74)

8. Stanton College Preparatory School, Jacksonville, Duval County Public Schools (#76)

9. Design and Architecture Senior High School, Miami, Miami-Dade County Public School (#86)

No other schools were listed in the Top 100, according to the list. However, the following schools rounded out the Top 20 schools in Florida.

13. iPrep Academy, Miami, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

14. Young Women's Preparatory Academy, Miami, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

15. Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy, Doral, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

16. International Studies Charter High School, Miami, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

17. MAST Academy, Key Biscayne, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

18. Terra Environmental Research Institute, Miami, Miami-Dade County Public Schools

19. Mason Classical Academy, Naples, Collier County Public Schools

20. Orlando Science Middle High Charter, Orlando, Orange County Public Schools

In general, the highest-ranked schools had students who performed well on state assessment for math, reading and science, U.S. News said. They also performed strongly in meeting the needs of underserved students, including those who are Black, Hispanic or from low-income households. The schools had a breadth of curriculum offerings and high graduation rates, and their students performed well on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

U.S. News said 11 of the top 20 ranked schools were charter or magnet schools.

In national rankings, the top five schools are, respectively: The Early College at Guilford, Greensboro, North Carolina; Signature School at Evansville, Indiana; The School for Advanced Studies in Miami; The Davidson Academy of Nevada at Reno; and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at Alexandria, Virginia.
