A Goodwill store in northern Florida was evacuated after a live grenade was found in a donation bin, police said.

PALATKA, FL — A Goodwill store in northern Florida was evacuated Friday morning after a live grenade was found inside a donation bin.

The store was secured and evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” Palatka police said.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad removed the grenade and remotely detonated it elsewhere.

An employee found the grenade in a bin near the donation door and the item never made it into the store, Liz Morgan, a Goodwill spokesperson, told First Coast News.

“We are grateful the store was evacuated and everyone was safe," she said.

This isn’t the first time a grenade has been donated to a Florida Goodwill, Morgan added. Several were found in a donation bin at a Jacksonville store in 2018.

“We want to remind the community to thoroughly check all items before donating, ensuring that hazardous items, such as explosives, firearms, or ammunition, are not accidentally included,” police said.
