The saga of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, the troubled Long Island couple who had been visiting national parks this summer and sharing their trip online, captivated the public and media after her disappearance in August and the Sept. 19 discovery of her body in a Wyoming national forest.

Laundrie became a person of interest after her death, and authorities conducted an intense monthlong search that began at his parents' home in North Port, Florida, and concluded when his remains were found this week in a nearby nature preserve.

Authorities said Laundrie had returned to Florida in Petito's van alone on Sept. 1 and was reported missing by his parents Sept. 17. Authorities had been searching for him until Wednesday, when his backpack and a notebook were found in the nature preserve, along with human remains that were later confirmed to be his.

Chris and Roberta Laundrie told police they last saw their son Sept. 13, when he said he was going hiking.

The case garnered national and international media attention and was followed closely on social media. It was not only a fascinating true-crime case but also renewed demands that similar attention be given to disappearances involving women of color.

Richard Stafford, the attorney for Petito's family, said the family would have no public reaction yet to the discovery of Laundrie's remains. "They are grieving the loss of their beautiful daughter," Stafford said. “Gabby’s family will make a statement at the appropriate time and when they are emotionally ready.”
