“We all recognize that AI may open new economic vistas. At the same time, we see stories about how AI can be abused, have adverse effects on education, or harm emotionally vulnerable users,” Perez said in a memo to members Tuesday.
“As policymakers, our understanding of the issue is complicated by the rapid emergence of this complex technology, and, as we’ve seen with social media, short-term legislative choices can have serious long-term consequences.”

The memo notes that Perez has asked subcommittee chairs to “facilitate discussions on the potentially positive and negative impacts of the use of AI in their respective jurisdictions.”
The AI discussion will come in addition to other scheduled work for the week.
“I would encourage all of you to come that week prepared to engage in this important topic, and I hope you emerge at the end of the week with a more fully rounded perspective on what AI means for the future of Florida,” Perez wrote.
