Tangy, Tart Treat Named Most Iconic Dessert In FL By Condé Nast Traveler

This sweet treat is "synonymous" with Florida and is the most iconic dessert in the state.

Luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler released this week a list of the most iconic desserts in each state, and a tangy and tart treat made the list for Florida.

"50 States, 50 Desserts: America's Favorite Sweet Treats," a list compiled by the national magazine, named the key lime pie as Florida's most iconic dessert option.

It took "months of reaching out to sources around the country and whittling the answers down" to gather the best sweet-tasting items, according to Condé Nast Traveler.

Key lime pie, a custard pie found at The Key Lime Pie Co. in Key West and Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe in Key West and DeLand, is "unmistakably bursting with citrusy pop," Condé Nast Traveler said. The magazine added the key lime is "synonymous" with Florida.

The favorable treat can also be found on menus at Joe’s Stone Crab, Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop and Fookem’s Fabulous in Miami.

Can't make it to Key West or Miami, no worries. Condé Nast Traveler says dessert lovers seeking key lime pie can find it throughout Florida.

Other restaurants selling the admired dessert are: Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory in Tavernier, The Florida Key Lime Pie Company in Cocoa Beach and Mrs. Mac's Kitchen in Key Largo.

See what Condé Nast Traveler had to say about the key lime pie:

"Eating a scoop of this thick yet creamy pie is like biting into a ray of beaming sunshine. Key lime pie’s origin story may be muddled, but whatever tale you believe—that it was created in the 1800s by a Florida Keys cook or by fishermen’s families to prevent scurvy or within a New York City test kitchen in the 1930s—there’s no denying that the balance of sweetness (from condensed milk and sugar) and zing (from Key lime) is the secret to this perfect tropical dessert. Add in a buttery graham cracker crust, and you’ve got yourself the official pie of the Sunshine State."
