Disney Donates $1 Million To OneOrlando Fund

The entertainment giant has pledged $1 million to the fund created by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to benefit victims of Sunday's mass shooting.

Orlando, FL — The Walt Disney Company has pledged $1 million to help the victims of Sunday’s terrorist attack at the Pulse Orlando Night Club & Ultra Bar.

The cash donation has been committed to the newly created OneOrlando Fund. That fund was established by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to help victims in the wake of the nation’s biggest mass shooting on record.

“We are heartbroken by this tragedy and hope our commitment will help those in the community affected by this senseless act,” said Bob Chapek, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman. “With 74,000 cast members who call Orlando home, we mourn the loss of the victims and offer our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones.”

Dyer announced the fund’s creation to “raise and receive money to help those families most affected by the tragic events that unfolded on June 12, 2016 in our community.”

Walt Disney World Resort staff members have also been working with other agencies in the region to provide support for the victims, the company announced Tuesday. The company has worked with OneBlood to help cast members and other employees donate blood at five locations across the resort’s expansive property. In addition, the resort has been providing free rooms for the families and friends of victims, the company announced on its blog.

Two other major fundraising efforts to benefit the victims of the Orlando shooting are also under way. Equality Florida has kicked off a GoFundMe campaign that has received more than $3 million in donations since Sunday. The Florida Disaster Fund has also been activated by Gov. Rick Scott to provide a clearinghouse for donations to benefit victims and their families.

Sunday’s shooting at Pulse Orlando has been classified at an act of terror by the federal government. The shooter, Omar Mateen, 29, was shot and killed by police after he killed 49 people and wounded 53 others.
