Major Flooding Expected At Rivers In Pasco, Hillsborough County

FLORIDA — Residents living near major rivers can expect major flooding as Hurricane Ian moves onshore Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay has already issued flood warnings for the Hillsborough River and the Little Manatee River in Hillsborough County.

The NWS forecasts major flooding for the Hillsborough River at Morris Bridge, in Temple Terrace and at Hillsborough River State Park starting late Thursday night.

At 32 feet above normal, the flooding begins at a trailer park downstream from Morris Bridge and upstream from the northern end of the Tampa Bypass Canal.

The river is expected to rise above flood stage early Friday morning and continue rising to 33.3 feet early Friday afternoon. The previous record was 33.3 feet on April 2, 1987.

Major flooding is also forecast for the Little Manatee River at U.S. 301 in Wimauma from late Tuesday until further notice.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, the water was at 8.4 feet over normal. The river is expected to rise above flood stage of 11 feet just after midnight Tuesday and continue rising to a crest of 19.5 feet Thursday evening. The previous crest of the river was 19.8 feet on Sept. 11, 1960.

Other rivers predicted to experience major flooding include:

• Cypress Creek At State Road 54 Worthington Gardens in Pasco County.
• The Alafia River at Lithia and at Riverview near U.S. 301 in Hillsborough County.
• The Peace River at Arcadia at State Road 70 in DeSoto County and at Bartow in Polk County.
• The Anclote River at Elfers at Little Road in Pasco County.
