YMCA Backpack Outreach

The YMCA is teaming up with the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) to provide 1,800 students in need with backpacks filled with school supplies Saturday. Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at YMCA Camp Cristina, 9840 Balm-Riverview Rd., Riverview.

At the outreach event, preregistered families will also have free access to child haircuts, blood pressure screenings, CPR demonstrations and snacks. Preregistered families will also get to enjoy dance performances, games, activities and a wood workshop for kids.

Cooking For A Cause

Copper Bell Cafe, 11228 Boyette Rd., Riverview, will host Cooking for a Cause Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5:30 p.m. with guest celebrity chef Gerald Stesiak. Stesiak, author of the book Raptor's Prey Vietnam 1966-1967, will mingle with guests, discuss his book and sign copies. The menu will include low-sugar spaghetti, linguine, penne rigati, garlic bread and salad. 

All the proceeds from the evening—gratuities and all—will be donated to the American Diabetes Association.

End-of-Summer Barbecue

The GFWC Brandon Junior Woman's Club will host an end-of-summer barbecue Saturday, Aug. 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the BJWC Clubhouse, 129 N. Moon Ave., Brandon. The barbecue will include a chicken or pork sandwich, macaroni salad, baked beans and soft drinks or bottled water for $8. Proceeds will go to Steppin' Stone Farm.

Back-To-School Fair

A Back-to-School Fair will take place Saturday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glazer Children's Museum, 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. For $5, children can prepare to go back to school with tips on health, wellness and safety, games, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artists, informative speakers, karaoke and workshops. The first 150 kids get a free goody bag filled with school supplies.

Rock On For First Responders

Local rock groups Scream Machine and Pitbull Toddler are joining forces with Cox Media to present a First Responders Tribute. The benefit concert will take place Friday, Aug. 9 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 5223 N. Orient Rd., Tampa. The donation to attend is $10 and proceeds from the concert will go to first responder charities including the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation and the Hillsborough Firefighters Benevolent Relief Fund.

Singer/Songwriter On Stage

Singer/songwriter and Riverview High School graduate Melissa Brethauer will perform in concert Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Nativity Catholic Church Youth Center, 705 E. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at www.nativitysummerconcert.eventbrite.com.

Brethauer plays guitar and piano. She released her debut CD, “Waiting,” in late 2009. She has performed at songwriting festivals in Nashville and in Las Vegas. She lives in Atlanta where she is currently working on her second CD.

Back-To-School Bash

FishHawk Ranch will host a back-to-school bash for FishHawk Ranch school kids Saturday, Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palmetto Club garden. The event will include food, a DJ, a bounce house, raffles, arts and crafts. Registration is required. Call 814-657-6629.

Music And Wine

Cork & Olive Wine Bar & Cafe, 1026 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico, will host trumpet player Chuck Weirich Friday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. 

Pit Party

The Noise Box, 1310 John Moore Rd., Brandon, will host The Pit Party Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5:30 p.m. with performances by Stealing Spines, Sanctions, Voyager, Cycles and Oathkeeper. Tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door. 

Just For Laughs

FishHawk Tavern 16144 Churchview Dr., Lithia, hosts an Open Mic Comedy Night each Sunday at 8 p.m. Sign-ups start at 7:30 p.m.
