Boca Raton: Don’t Try to Develop Our Beachfront

Two years ago, a four-story house was approved on the beach and city officials want to block any similar developments.

BOCA RATON, FL - Boca Raton is looking at options to block development of its beaches, including seizing private property under eminent domain. Two years ago, a four-story house was approved on the beach and city officials want to block any similar developments. Eminent domain would allow the city to buy private beachfront land to avoid development.

The Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District is looking to buy properties along North Ocean Boulevard. The chair of the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District tells the Sun-Sentinel the land could be used as parks. If district officials want to use eminent domain, they will have to get appraisals to determine the fair market value of the land. A court would ultimately decide the issue if the owners and the district do not agree on a purchase price.

Last year, some owners rejected the district's efforts to buy beachfront properties.
