The Parrish boy was among a group of teenagers gathered at the Bradenton home on 8th Avenue Drive W.

Witnesses told investigators that Layne, who was drinking, was waving around a small revolver during the party, according to the probable cause affidavit.

One witness told the sheriff’s office that he asked Layne not to point the gun at him, as he was concerned it might accidentally go off.

Though Layne said it wasn’t loaded, the witness told him, “The number one rule of gun safety was always assume a gun is loaded,” the affidavit said.

Then, “in a joking manner,” Layne pointed the gun at the victim and pulled the trigger, shooting him in the chest, records show.

Most teens at the gathering ran from the home after the shooting, deputies said.
