Bradenton Bicyclist Struck After Failing to Stop at Red Light, Troopers Say

The man was hit by a Ford Explorer and thrown from his bike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A bicyclist was struck by a car and seriously injured Thursday afternoon after he failed to stop for a red light at a Bradenton intersection, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Troopers say the 49-year-old Bradenton man was headed east on Ninth Avenue West on his Mongoose bicycle around 4 p.m. Thursday when he failed to stop for the red light at the intersection with 39th Street West.

He traveled into the direct path of a Ford Explorer headed southbound on 39th and was struck and thrown from his bike and onto the pavement. He was not wearing a helmet, investigators said.

The bicyclist was taken to Blake Medical Center for treatment.

Patch is not releasing the man's name because his family had not yet been notified, according to the highway patrol's report.

The bicyclist is being charged with violation of a traffic control device, the report states.

The driver of the Ford, 77-year-old John A. Graves of Bradenton, was not injured or charged in the crash.

Alcohol was not a factor, investigators said.
