BRADENTON, FL — We all know student athletes who also bring their A-game to other parts of their lives.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know the individual stories behind the leaderboard.

This submission comes from Edie Watson who nominated her granddaughter, Abigayle, of Bradenton, who plays college softball.

Why do you believe the star student athlete should be recognized?

She is not only a (Division 1) junior college softball player, (she’s also) a dedicated, hardworking student. She continues her high academic achievements in college, where she is the driving force behind her success. When not at college, she teaches softball skills to younger players, performed community service while in the National Honor Society, and is quick to help others when they have a need. She is fair and non-judgmental, and she makes wise choices even though she is only 18 years old. She is a Christian and shares her faith with those who ask her about how she handles everything. She treats everyone the same, whether they are 2 years old or 82 years old. She takes responsibility for her actions and does not play the "blame game." She has overcome a learning disability (and) … the loss of close family members by relying on her faith and turning negatives into positives. She has a caregiver's heart and expects to graduate in a couple years as a physical therapist assistant so she can continue with her unselfish approach to life.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star student athlete?

Abigayle has endured the hardships of bullying that many students face, but she has her inner faith that helps her move forward. She is supportive of others in the same situation and would never engage in dehumanizing another student or team member.

Keep up the great work, Abigayle!
