Florida Reports 183 Coronavirus Deaths

FL health officials reported 183 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday as the state's hardest hit county announced plans to reopen indoor dining.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 183 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday as the state's hardest hit county announced plans to reopen indoor restaurant dining rooms amid a declining positivity rate.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced the reopening of indoor restaurant dining in his county starting on Monday. He said Miami-Dade had fewer than 1,000 people hospitalized from the virus for the first time in months.

State health officials said Tuesday marked Florida's 13th straight day of positivity under 10 percent while officials reported 2,673 new cases of the coronavirus for a new statewide total of 605,502 cases, up from 602,829 a day earlier.

Health officials said the daily positivity rate is calculated by taking the number of people who test PCR-or antigen-positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive.

The total number of deaths in Florida rose to 10,580 Tuesday, up from 10,397 a day earlier. Florida's most recent one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set on Aug. 11. Health officials reported another 137 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.

Florida's overall positivity rate was at 13.54 percent Tuesday based on 4,473,343 total tests.

Thirty-four of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Tuesday. That compares with 72 new deaths Monday, 52 new deaths on Sunday (health officials reported 51), 106 new deaths Saturday, 122 new deaths on Friday (health officials reported 119), 118 new deaths Thursday (health officials reported 117), 174 new deaths Wednesday and 219 new deaths last Tuesday.

  • Palm Beach County reported five new deaths.
  • Pinellas County reported 18 new deaths.
  • Pasco County reported 14 new deaths.
  • Polk County reported 12 new deaths.
  • Escambia County reported seven new deaths.
  • Hernando County reported seven new deaths.
  • Indian River County reported seven new deaths.
  • Sarasota County reported six new deaths.
  • St. Lucie County reported six new deaths.
  • Marion County reported five new deaths.
  • Volusia County reported five new deaths.
  • Duval County reported five new deaths.
  • Hillsborough County reported four new deaths.
  • Lee County reported four new deaths.
  • Highlands County four reported new deaths.
  • Bay County reported three new deaths.
  • Orange County reported three new deaths.
  • Collier County reported three new deaths.
  • Lake County reported three new deaths.
  • Okaloosa County reported three new deaths.
  • Suwannee County reported three new deaths.
  • Citrus County reported two new deaths.

The state reported 37,038 hospitalizations up from 36,596 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 442 new hospitalizations over the previous day.

State health officials reported a total of 4,543 current hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, down from 4,658 current hospitalizations a day earlier.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 153,385 cases of the virus as of Tuesday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 69,584 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 40,853 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 35,953 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 34,910 cases.
