Florida Reports 2,564 New Coronavirus Cases, 38 New Deaths

Florida health officials reported 38 new coronavirus deaths on Sunday and another 2,564 new cases of the virus.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 38 new coronavirus deaths on Sunday and another 2,564 new cases of the virus.

Twenty of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Sunday. These counties include Bay, Brevard, Charlotte, Collier, Columbia, Miami-Dade, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Levy, Marion, Okaloosa, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Seminole, St. Lucie and Volusia

The daily total compares to 61 new deaths Saturday, 100 new deaths Friday, 151 new deaths Thursday (state health officials reported 149), 128 new deaths Wednesday (health officials reported 127), 187 new deaths Tuesday, 68 new deaths Monday and 14 new deaths last Sunday.

The total number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Florida rose to 646,431 on Sunday up from 643,867 a day earlier.

That compares to 736,285 cases and 13,709 deaths in California; 655,815 cases and 13,576 deaths in Texas as well as 438,772 cases and 32,987 deaths in New York, according to information compiled by Johns Hopkins.

Florida health officials reported the state's 25th day of daily positivity under 10 percent. The daily positivity rate is calculated by taking the number of people who test PCR-or antigen-positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive.

Florida's overall positivity rate, which is cumulative, was at 13.49 percent as of Sunday based on 4,791,823 total tests.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 38,426 cases of the virus while Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 37,074 cases.

Sarasota County, which includes the city of Sarasota, reported 7,410 cases of the virus. Manatee County, which includes Bradenton, reported 10,656 cases. Pinellas County reported 20,425 cases of the virus while Pasco County reported 8,316 cases. Polk County, which includes Lakeland, reported 17,799 cases of the virus.

The total number of deaths in Florida climbed to 11,849 Sunday, up from 11,811 a day earlier. Florida's most recent one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set on Aug. 11. Health officials reported another 152 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida.

The state reported 40,024 hospitalizations on Sunday up from 39,912 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 112 new hospitalizations over the previous day.

State health officials also reported a total of 3,164 current hospitalizations with a
primary diagnosis of COVID-19, down from 3,235 current hospitalizations a day earlier.
