Florida Surpasses 10,000 Coronavirus Deaths
The coronavirus death toll in Florida surpassed 10,000 Thursday.
TALLAHASSEE, FL — The coronavirus death toll in Florida surpassed 10,000 Thursday as state health officials reported 4,555 new cases of the virus.
The total number of deaths in Florida rose to 10,049 Thursday up from 9,758 a day earlier. Florida's most recent one-day record of 276 reported deaths was set on Aug. 11.
Health officials reported another 137 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in Florida. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida rose to 588,602 on Thursday, up from 584,047 a day earlier.

Thursday marked the eighth straight day Florida experienced a daily positivity rate below 10 percent, according to health officials. Despite the apparent decline in new cases, Florida's overall positivity rate continues to tick upward, according to data provided by the Florida Department of Health. The overall positivity rate was at 13.55 percent Thursday based on 4,342,418 total tests.

Thirty of Florida's 67 counties reported 118 new deaths Thursday (health officials reported 117) while Seminole County reported one fewer death.
That compares with 174 new deaths Wednesday, 219 new deaths Tuesday, 87 new deaths Monday (health officials reported 89 deaths), 107 new deaths Sunday, 205 new deaths Saturday (state health officials reported 204), 228 new deaths Friday, 148 new deaths Thursday and 226 new deaths last Wednesday (state health officials reported 212).

- Miami-Dade County reported 19 new deaths.
- Palm Beach County reported 17 new deaths.
- Broward County reported two new deaths.
- Lee County reported nine new deaths.
- Polk County reported seven new deaths.
- Escambia County reported six new deaths.
- Martin County reported five new deaths.
- Pinellas County reported five new deaths.
- Hillsborough County reported four new deaths.
- Jackson County reported four new deaths.
- St. Lucie County reported four new deaths.
- Brevard County reported three new deaths.
- Highlands County reported three new deaths.
- Okaloosa County reported three new deaths.
- Orange County reported three new deaths.
- Santa Rosa County reported three new deaths.
- Bay County reported two new deaths.
- Clay County reported two new deaths.
- Columbia County reported two new deaths.
- Hernando County reported two new deaths.
- Indian River County reported two new deaths.
- Osceola County reported two new deaths.
- Volusia County reported two new deaths.
- Citrus County reported one new death.
- Collier County reported one new death.
- Flagler County reported one new death.
- Gulf County reported one new death.
- Monroe County reported one new death.
- Nassau County reported one new death.
- Sarasota County reported one new death.
The state reported 35,650 hospitalizations, up from 35,200 a day earlier. That represents an increase of 450 new hospitalizations over the previous day.
State health officials reported a total of 5,340 current hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, which is up from 5,312 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 149,162 cases of the virus as of Thursday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 68,068 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 39,886 cases.
Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 35,061 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 34,135 cases.
