Lakeland Takes Top Honors in Hurricane Challenge

Eight high schools competed in the local tournament hosted at Manatee High.

Lakeland High School took top honors at the Coach Kelly Memorial Hurricane Team Challenge over the weekend after going undefeated in 8 duals.

Park Vista High School finished 7-1 to take second place and host Manatee High took third place with a 5-3 record. Manatee won it’s pool on Friday by beating Sunset High School 72-12, Alonso High 42-37 and Nova High School 42-31.

After winning Friday's pool, Manatee started Saturday with a 45-30 victory over Jupiter High School. The Hurricanes followed with a 48-36 victory over George Jenkins High School.

After 5 wins, the Hurricanes went on a slide losing to Lakeland High School 36-46, followed by a 27-51 loss to Park Vista High. Manatee ended the day with a loss to Bloomingdale High School by a score of 36-42.

Senior Brett Barber, 152, went 8-0 for the tournament. He also received a gold medal for the tournament and an academic acheivement award. Freshman Jesse Fulk, 138, also was undefeated in eight matches. He also received a gold medal and the coaches voted him Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weight classes.

Senior Mike Keely, 132, finished the tournament 6-1 and received a brone medal. Junior Donnie Jankowski, 126, finished 5-1 and also received a bronze medal.

The four received "all tournament" team awards for their weight classes.

Other winners include: Senior We McCullen, 145, finished 6-2. Sophomore Jake Stickler, 285, finished 5-3 and freshman Tim Dinsdale, 106, finished 5-3.
