BRADENTON, FL — Southeast High School’s football coach, Brett Timmons, has been honored as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2021 Coach of the Year.

Throughout the season, 10 coaches were selected as the Buccaneers’ Coach of the Week. Voters selected one of them to win the Coach of the Year honors.

In a video celebrating his win that was shared by Manatee County Schools Wednesday, Southeast’s Athletic Director Kevin Lynum said that “things have been trending up” since Timmons joined the school’s football program.

Lynum also noted that “an NFL organization felt enough of this man and the job that he has done with each of you to name him the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach of the Year.”

In the video, Timmons told his players and others celebrating with him that “leadership is top down, but it grows from the bottom up.”

The recognition is more about his student-athletes and the community, he added. “I’m just a piece of the puzzle. Nothing more, nothing less.”

A graduate of Southeast, Timmons was a linebacker for the school’s state championship-winning teams in 1993 and 1994, according to the Bradenton Herald. He went on to play football for Tulane University.

The former head coach at Out-of-Door Academy, he took over Southeast’s football program in 2017, beating out a field of 55 applicants. He’d previously applied for the position in 2013 and 2015.

The team had an overall 5-3 record for the 2021-22 season, according to Max Preps.

As the Coach of the Year, Timmons will receive a $2,000 grant from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Foundation to help maintain and upgrade Southeast’s football program. He’ll also represent the Bucs as their Don Shula Coach of the Year nominee.
