Pregnant Woman Critically Hurt, Unborn Child Dies In Crash With Wrong-Way Driver

A pregnant woman was critically injured and lost her unborn baby after being hit head-on by a wrong-way driver, Palmetto police said.

PALMETTO, FL — A mother was critically injured and lost her unborn baby in an early Sunday morning crash with a wrong-way driver on DeSoto Bridge, Palmetto police said in a news release.

Laurentino Serrano-Juarez, 31, of Bradenton was driving an SUV south in the bridge’s northbound lane around 4:30 a.m.

He hit a car driven by a 28-year-old pregnant St. Petersburg woman head-on, police said.

Both drivers were taken to a local hospital. Serrano-Juarez was treated and later released into police custody.

The woman, who was critically injured, remains hospitalized after losing her unborn child in the crash, police said.

Serrano-Juarez was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury to another, DUI property damage and driving with no valid driver’s license.

He was booked into the Manatee County Jail.
