The Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash.

Myakka City and other sections of eastern Manatee County were hard hit when Hurricane Ian pummeled Southwest Florida as a powerful Category 4 storm on Wednesday.

Because of significant flooding to the Myakka River impacting local roadways, many residents in the region have been unable to leave their homes since then and there’s “a massive humanitarian and health initiative” underway in eastern Manatee County, according to a county news release.
