Bank jugging is when criminals watch for customers leaving a bank with a money envelope, bank bag or other indication they have a large amount of money. The thieves will then try to rob them and leave with the money, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The criminals could be watching from a parked car or standing nearby.

How To Protect Yourself

"We must all do our part to protect ourselves and safeguard our money," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "Even if you're going to the bank in broad daylight, criminals will watch from their parked cars to see what you're bringing back with you. Be aware of your surroundings and if you're returning to your car with money, keep it hidden in your purse or pocket. Remember, if you see something suspicious, say something and call 911."

Chronister also tells drivers and passengers to lock their car doors when leaving and returning to their vehicles.
