Hillsborough Crime Blotter for Greater Brandon: First Quarter 2011

Using the crime mapping tool posted online by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Brandon Patch reports on the first-quarter findings for six zip codes in the Greater Brandon area.

Theft and traffic incidents each accounted for roughly one-quarter of the 3,279 offenses reported by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for six ZIP codes in the Greater Brandon area for the first quarter of 2011.

The numbers were determined using the newly released online “Crime Mapping” feature posted by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The online Hillsborough County Crime Map allows for the review of crime data based on date range, ZIP code, place name or address. Victims’ names are not included but noted is the type of crime, location, reference number and date reported.

With the , search results appear as points on a map, or as clusters. A pie graph details the number of occurrences for each crime category. A link to Crime Stoppers, with each incident featured, allows for the anonymous reporting of tips to aid in the investigation of crimes and subsequent arrests.

For this report, Brandon Patch used the Brandon ZIP codes of 33510 and 33511. Also, ZIP codes for Dover (33527), Seffner (33584), Tampa (33619) and Valrico (33594).

Theft and traffic incidents each accounted for roughly one-quarter of the 3,279 offenses reported by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for six ZIP codes in the Greater Brandon area for the first quarter of 2011.

Also determined:

  • Reported incidents in March are down 5.6 percent from the number of incidents reported in January.
  • ZIP code 33511 has the highest number of reported incidents, and especially in the categories of theft and traffic. The 33511 ZIP code area encompasses the heaviest concentration of Brandon area shopping, including Regency Square and the Westfield Brandon mall.
  • The ZIP code showing the greatest drop in number of reported incidents is 33619 — from 316 in January to 267 in March. Only one of the ZIP codes, 33594, showed an increase in incidents for the same time period, but only from 81 to 83 incidents.
  • Four of the 15 categories each accounted for a double-digit percentage of the total number of incidents in quarter one (3,279). These categories were theft (24.34 percent), traffic (23.21 percent), battery (13.6 percent) and burglary (12.84 percent). Next in line: mischief (8.54 percent) and drugs (7.35 percent).
  • In the first quarter of 2011, there were 143 reports of driving under the influence, which accounted for 4.36 percent of the 3,279 total. Drugs accounted for 241 incidents, or 7.35 percent of the total.
