Record Trampled as Cancer Foes Relay For Life at Seffner’s Armwood High

What a weekend for Seffner, where the Greater Brandon community engaged in its annual Relay For Life, only this year to welcome arms at Armwood High.

Thanks to a willing principal and to the die-hard tenacity of committed Relay For Life organizers, the little Relay that could proved that it, indeed, can.

From here it can only get better for the participants and supporters of the Seffner Relay For Life, who kicked off their inaugural year on the field and track of Armwood High on the last weekend of March.

With the number of participants and the spirit they possessed there can be nothing but growth for the Relay that started six years ago on the track of Burnett Middle School.

In its first year, the Seffner event raised roughly $6,000 for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.

With no lights on the field, organizers had to rent them. There were no bathrooms. There was no great tie-in with the high school students, who at other Relay For Life events in southeastern Hillsborough County participate by the hundreds.

Seffner organizers said they were grateful to the administration at Burnett, but also that they had tried to use a high school before to no success.

Armwood was always under construction, and apparently the principal was hesitant to allow for the use of its field and track, which have been highly upgraded as a showcase for the powerful and state-leading football team.

Strawberry Crest was off limits after it opened, as the Relay For Life at Plant City High School has been built and billed as one of the perennial state leaders.

This year, Armwood opened its doors and the results were readily apparent — and improved. Going into the event, the Relay had already topped its goal of $43,000.

At the event, leaders said the event had already topped $53,000.
