View Beyond Brandon: Joe Chillura Courthouse Square Park
After attending to your civic duties at the Fred B. Karl County Center in downtown Tampa, visit the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square, across the street. Some views of the park, at dusk, following the March 2 meeting of the Hillsborough County Commissioners.
The Freedom Sculpture, courtesy of ProLogis of Tampa, beckons visitors to the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square Park at the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Morgan, Pierce and Madison streets in downtown Tampa. The park is across the street from both the courthouse and the Fred B. Karl County Center, at 601 East Kennedy Blvd.
The saying etched into the sculpture’s base was written by Tampa Poet Laureate James E. Tokley Sr.
According to the park’s “History Walk," the park was dedicated in January 2000. The park is one city block, 245-by-242 feet. Walk 10 times around the park and register a trek of about 1 mile. The “dome” of the park’s gazebo “resembles the dome of the 1892 County courthouse and the image on the County seal.” Shade is provided by live oak trees “and the palms are the Florida state tree, the cabbage palm.” The ground cover is a native plant called, “coontie."
