Accused Kayak Thief Caught: Cops

Clearwater Police say they've found a man accused of taking a five-finger discount on kayaks.

CLEARWATER, FL — The Clearwater Police Department has announced an arrest in a recent caper that involved a man taking a five-finger discount several kayaks.

Police announced the arrest of Herbert Wagner, 23, on grand theft charges Tuesday afternoon. The development came only a few hours after authorities released surveillance photos taken from the scene of the crime. Police say a tipster reached out to them after news of the crime made its way onto social media Tuesday morning.

According to the agency, the burglary happened on June 10 when a man went up to a home in the 800 block of Bay Esplande and helped himself to a kayak worth $500. Two other kayaks, valued at $1,250, were taken from the home’s backyard later in the evening, an email from the police department said.

All three kayaks have been reported, police said.

Wagner had not yet been booked into the Pinellas County Jail as of late Tuesday afternoon.
