Bicyclist Suffers Head Injuries in Memorial Causeway Crash

The 64-year-old man lost control of his bike on the sidewalk of the Memorial Causeway Bridge in Clearwater and suffered life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

UPDATE: David F. Carlivati, who suffered life-threatening injuries from a bicycle accident on Memorial Causeway Bridge Tuesday morning, is listed in critical condition Wednesday, according to Clearwater Police.

Police released Carlivati's name after notifying his family.

A bicyclist who lost control of his bike on the Memorial Causeway Bridge was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Clearwater authorities said Tuesday.

The 64-year-old man, who was not identified pending notification of his next of kin, was riding westbound down the north sidewalk of the bridge around 11:45 a.m.

"At some point the subject became separated from his bicycle and traveled several feet before landing on the sidewalk," Clearwater public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts said in a media release.

Although he was wearing a helmet, the man suffered head injuries and was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Watts said.

About 15 minutes later, a second bicyclist traveling westbound on the south sidewalk of the bridge apparently crashed after picking up speed and losing control of his bike, Watts said. He suffered a broken bone in his arm and was taken to Largo Medical Center for treatment, officials said.
