Box Cars Set To Take Over Clearwater Streets

The annual Achieva Box Car Rally will feature more than 80 participants racing to support area schools.

CLEARWATER, FL – The sounds of engines roaring through the streets will not be heard in Clearwater during one of the city’s most famous races.

The annual Achieva Box Car Rally is set to take place Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 80 teams are expected to take place in this fundraiser to provide classroom grants to Pinellas County schools.

The main course, which takes place in downtown Clearwater, starts at the intersection of Osceola Avenue and Cleveland Street. Participants will race west on Cleveland Street down the hill, finishing at the waterfront.

Aside from the races, the Achieva Box Car Rally features vendors, food, inflatables, balloon art, children’s games, raffles and face painting. The event is free to attend, but food and some children’s games will cost extra, with all proceeds going to support the classroom grants. Local schools and community groups will perform at the vent as well.

The main event, the box car races, will feature two divisions: The All American Soap Box Derby style car division and the Homemade car division, where participants are known to create cars out of anything from filing cabinets to surfboards.

The divisions are subdivided into six classes:

  • Pee Wee: Driver is age 7-12
  • Teen: Driver is age 13-17
  • Adult: Driver is age 18 and older
  • High School: Driver and car represent a high school team
  • Corporate: Driver and car represent a business or organization team
  • Auto League: Driver and car represent a business in the automotive industry
