CLEARWATER, FL — With hurricane season just days away, Clearwater officials want to make sure they are ready before, during and after a major storm.

On Tuesday morning, police, firefighters and other city employees took part in a mock hurricane drill ahead of the start of hurricane season, which is June 1.

Coordinated by those who handle emergency management for the city, the drill focused on what would happen in the aftermath of a hurricane.

City employees in the field then drove through for a lunch and bottle of water. Officials said the drill helped workers figure out how such a site would flow and assisted them in figuring out any logistical problems that might arise.

"It's much more helpful to do an exercise like this ahead of the time you would actually need it so that issues can be identified and remedied. Thank you to everyone who took part in this exercise," city officials posted to Facebook.

Weather analysts estimate the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season will be an active one that produces nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

They also forecast a 75 percent chance of a hurricane coming within 50 miles of Florida this season and a 44 percent chance of a major hurricane within 50 miles of Florida's coastline.
