Clearwater Man Charged in Crash That Killed Hillsborough High Student

A Clearwater man has been charged in a crash that left a 17-year-old high school senior dead.

CLEARWATER, FL — A 56-year-old Clearwater man faces criminal charges following a Wednesday crash in Tampa that left a 17-year-old Hillsborough High School senior dead.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Nikolaos Konstantinou was heading eastbound on Hillsborough Avenue near Blue Springs Drive in Tampa around 8:07 p.m. Oct. 12. As Konstantinou’s Hyundai Sonata continued eastbound, Ashley Perdomo was heading south across Hillsborough Avenue.

A highway patrol report said, Perdomo walked into Konstantinou’s path and was struck by the vehicle. Konstantinou is accused of fleeing the scene.

Perdomo was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, but died from her injuries.

The highway patrol received a tip through Crime Stoppers that led troopers to Konstantinou’s Prospect Avenue home. He was subsequently arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, a highway patrol report said. His Sonata was also seized as evidence.

Konstantinou was booked into the Pinellas County Jail Thursday night. He was released in lieu of $15,000 bond Friday morning, according to jail records.

Perdomo was reportedly walking home from work when the crash occurred. News of her death shook the Hillsborough High School community Thursday morning.

"It has been a difficult morning at Hillsborough High School," the school district reported in an email.
