Clearwater Pitches in to Help Loggerhead Sea Turtle

A rehabilitated female loggerhead sea turtle was released Thursday morning from Clearwater Beach.

CLEARWATER, FL — Clearwater Marine Aquarium is celebrating the release of its third sea turtle equipped with a satellite tag. Xeno, a sub-adult female loggerhead, was put back into waters off Clearwater Beach Thursday morning.

According to the aquarium, Xeno was brought to the aquarium on Sept. 17. The critter was found about 15 miles offshore, “floating and unable to dive.” Xeno had fluid in her body and displayed signs of organism growth on her shell.

“X-rays showed an extensive amount of shell-like material was in her GI tract,” the aquarium explained on its website. “After a series of treatments, including antibiotics and vitamins, she has been cleared for release.”

Xeno was equipped with a satellite tag to help researchers at the aquarium keep up with her movements in the water.

“Satellite tracking is beneficial for research purposes including the migration of sea turtles, their foraging behavior and much more,” the aquarium said.

Xeno was released around 11 a.m. Oct. 27 on Clearwater Beach behind the Sandpearl Resort. She joins Kreacher and Ozzy as the aquarium’s tagged turtles. Her release drew quite a crowd with Clearwater Police officers, volunteers and aides all assisting in the effort.

Clearwater Police posted photos of the occasion to the agency’s Facebook page.

“Our thanks to CMA for all of the work they do in protecting and saving our animals,” the post read.
