Clearwater Wastewater Treatment Plant Pump Station Fails

Breaking: Clearwater residents are being warned to steer clear of streets that are blocked off.

CLEARWATER, FL — The city of Clearwater has announced that its Marshall Street wastewater treatment plan’s influent pump station has shut down due to mechanical failures.

“The plant treats wastewater and is rated for 10 million gallons per day,” the city wrote in a Thursday evening email to media. “We have been receiving approximately 30 million gallons of wastewater per day through this plant due to the heavy rains.”

The system is reportedly backing up with wastewater overflowing through manholes at locations that are served by the treatment plant, the city said.

“Clearwater Public Utilities is working on obtaining rental pumps to bypass the pumps that are not working,” the city said. “Crews are going into the streets surrounding the plant and barricading off areas where the manhole covers may be off and wastewater is in the streets.”

Residents are asked to avoid entering streets that have been blocked off.
