Small Plane Crashes At St. Pete-Clearwater Airport; Pilot Injured

A single-engine airplane crashed on Runway 36 at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.

CLEARWATER, FL - A single-engine airplane crashed on Runway 36 at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, 14700 Terminal Parkway in Clearwater, at 1:19 p.m. Saturday.

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies said the plane was piloted by Robert Brandon, 67, of Pensacola. Brandon told deputies that he was headed to Pensacola when his plane took off and started experiencing mechanical problems. Deputies say Brandon turned the plane in a right eastbound direction to try to land and the plane crashed next to the runway. The engine and both wings of the plane were damaged as a result of the crash. Brandon was the plane's only occupant.

He was transported to Bayfront Medical with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Pinellas deputies are assisting the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board with the plane crash investigation.
