Railcrew Xpress cutting jobs in Jacksonville after losing contract with CSX (jaxdailyrecord.com) — Thirty-four Jacksonville workers will lose their jobs as Railcrew Xpress shuts its local facility after Jacksonville-based CSX canceled a transportation contract effective February 27. The Missouri company is also closing five other Florida sites, but the Jacksonville cuts are the largest single impact, affecting local rail-related employment and families here at home.
   

2. FHP investigating deadly crash in Jacksonville's Regency area (actionnewsjax.com) — A deadly crash late Tuesday morning shut down lanes near Southside Boulevard and Bradley Road in Jacksonville’s Regency area, involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle. Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating, and drivers in that busy corridor may experience delays while troopers work the scene and gather details.
   

3. Youth Crisis Center debuts new initiative for expecting, young mothers facing homelessness (firstcoastnews.com) — A Jacksonville-based Youth Crisis Center program is opening tiny-house duplexes to give pregnant and young mothers facing homelessness a safe place to live. The MILLS initiative can house up to ten young adults with infants or toddlers. Residents receive life skills training, mental health therapy, and parenting support to help them build stability and care for their children on the First Coast.
   

4. Arrest made in Airbnb party shooting with 5 victims in Jacksonville (jacksonville.com) — Jacksonville police arrested a 19-year-old after a holiday party at an Airbnb on Arlingwood Avenue turned into a shooting that wounded five people, including a 16-year-old boy. A SWAT team and U.S. Marshals took the suspect into custody on Sibbald Road, and all victims are expected to survive. Most of those injured are from Jacksonville, with one from St. Augustine.
   

5. Hidden holiday hazards: How you can keep your home safe (news4jax.com) — Jacksonville fire officials are urging residents to take extra care with Christmas trees, space heaters, and holiday cooking to prevent home fires this season. They stress watering live trees daily, keeping space heaters three feet from anything flammable, and never leaving the kitchen while cooking. Officials also remind families to maintain smoke detectors and never leave candles burning unattended.
