A new resolution from Councilmember Jimmy Peluso would formally rule those areas out, while city leaders prepare to review consultant-recommended sites and residents question whether public feedback will truly shape the final location.
   

2. Jacksonville church, contractors, flooring company, volunteers step up to help family left homeless after fire (news4jax.com) — In Jacksonville, a small church and local contractors are renovating a donated house so a mother and her two children, left homeless by a recent fire, can move in next week. Volunteers, a flooring company, and handymen are providing labor and materials for free while the family waits in a motel.

Student brings loaded gun to Jacksonville elementary school, no threats (actionnewsjax.com) — A student brought a loaded gun to Woodland Acres Elementary in Jacksonville, prompting random security screenings at the Duval County school through Christmas break. No threats were made and the weapon was confiscated after classmates reported it, but law enforcement and child welfare officials are now investigating. Parents say they’re shaken yet grateful the situation was handled quickly and safely.
   

4. 'Let's try to get them back': JTA CEO hopes reduced fare will boost ridership, save riders money (firstcoastnews.com) — Starting in February, Jacksonville bus riders will see JTA fares drop from $1.75 to $1 for a six‑month pilot aimed at boosting ridership and easing costs for low-income riders. The NAVI route along Bay Street will become free even sooner, after paid fares were blamed for a noticeable ridership dip during ongoing construction.
   

5. Jacksonville man wins $1M prize in Florida's popular Gold Rush game (jacksonville.com) — A Jacksonville man from Duval County just claimed a $1 million prize from Florida’s Gold Rush Multiplier scratch-off after buying his $50 ticket at the Winn-Dixie on Beach Boulevard. He opted for a lump-sum payout of $638,100, adding another big win to one of the state’s most popular lottery games.
