Deputies Seek Information About A White Van Involved In A Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash
The Polk County Sheriff's Office is seeking information about a driver who drove a white van on Kathleen Road hitting a bicyclist.
LAKELAND, FL — Deputies have asked the public's help identifying the driver of a van Sunday evening who hit and killed a bicyclist then drove off on First Street NW in the Kathleen area of Lakeland, according to a Polk County Sheriff's Office news release.
Antonio Adam Smiley, 36, rode his bike east on First Street NW at about 6:13 p.m. near Stroud Road at the same time a white Ford E-350 van without a non-working right headlight hit him from behind and drove away, investigators said. The van possibly has damage to the front passenger side area.
The victim wore dark clothing and did not have a helmet on, deputies said. His bike did not have any lights either. Officials closed First Street NW for five hours following the hit-and-run crash.

"The driver of the van knew that a person was struck, and then made no effort to check on Mr. Smiley," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "He or she showed no concern for Mr. Smiley's condition. In fact, the only concern the driver had was to get away as quickly as possible. I can promise you, our detectives are going to do everything they can to find that van and the person responsible."
Anyone with information regarding the crash, the van, and/or the driver, is asked to contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-298-6200.
