Deputy Blane Lane's Name Added To Polk County Sheriff's Memorial

Polk County sheriff's deputies paid tribute to fallen deputies during ceremonies at Polk County Law Enforcement Memorial in Lakeland.

LAKELAND, FL — The Polk County Sheriff's Office gathered for the 2023 annual Polk County Memorial Service at the Polk County Law Enforcement Memorial in the Lakeland Veterans Memorial Park in honor of National Police week.

Polk County deputies joined law enforcement agencies across the country in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving as law enforcement officers.

"Sadly, this year another name was added to the memorial," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Deputy Blane Lane became the 37th name honored at the site.

The21-year-old Polk County sheriff's deputy died after being shot by a stray bullet from a fellow deputy's gun while deputies were serving a felony warrant on a woman who was armed Oct. 4.

A resident of Fort Meade and the father of a 3-year-old child, Lane entered the Polk State College law enforcement-detention academy in September 2020 and was hired as a detention deputy in May 2021 before being assigned to the Northwest District Office as a patrol deputy.
