Florida Deaths From Coronavirus Surpass 500; 21,628 Cases

The number of Florida deaths from the new coronavirus topped the 500 mark for the first time Tuesday.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of Florida deaths from the new coronavirus topped the 500 mark for the first time Tuesday as the number of confirmed cases in the state rose to 21,628.

State health officials reported 571 deaths in Florida as of Tuesday night, an increase of 72 over the previous 24-hour period.

Miami-Dade County reported 34 new deaths from the virus during that period. Palm Beach County reported 11 new deaths. Orange County reported five new deaths. Broward County reported four new deaths as did Manatee County.

Bay County reported its second death from the virus. Pinellas County, Duval County, Escambia County, Martin County, St. Lucie County and Polk County each reported one new death as did Lee County. Hillsborough County, Sarasota County and Suwannee County each reported two new deaths from the virus.

There were a total of 3,050 hospitalizations from the virus reported in Florida. The state had a 10.5 percent positive test rate out of 207,842 total tests.

Some 60 percent of the cases are still concentrated in three South Florida counties, including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Miami-Dade reported 7,712 cases as of Tuesday night, more than any Florida County. Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, had 3,261 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 1,740 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 819 cases as of Tuesday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,038 cases.
