FL Publix Sold Smoked Salmon Recalled Over Listeria Risk: FDA

LAKELAND, FL — A St. Petersburg company has recalled nearly 300 cases of smoked salmon sold at Florida Publix stores over possible listeria contamination, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Seven Seas International USA recalled 295 cases of Biltmore Smoked Sockeye Salmon after routine testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services detected possible Listeria monocytogenes in the product, according to the recall notice.

The salmon bears product lot number R4058 and was sold prior to March 14 with a best-by date of April 14. No other lots were affected by the recall, officials said.

Eating food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms are sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems.

Consumers who purchased the affected salmon should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
