Speeding Car Overturns In Crash With Police Patrol SUV: FL Highway Patrol

A speeding driver and officer were injured in an early morning crash in Winter Haven, the Florida Patrol said.

WINTER HAVEN, FL — A speeding car overturned in an early Sunday morning crash with a Winter Haven police patrol SUV, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

A Honda Accord driven by a 21-year-old Winter Haven man was heading south on 1st Street South, approaching the intersection of State Road 540/Cypress Gardens Boulevard around 2:20 a.m.

At the same time, a Winter Haven police Tahoe going to a call with its emergency lights on was traveling east in the outside lane of SR-540 approaching the 1st Street South intersection.

As the SUV passed through the intersection, the car sped into it and hit the front left of the police vehicle, FHP said.

Both vehicles were redirected to the southeast of the intersection.

The car ran off the road toward the Dutch Brothers Coffee parking lot and overturned after hitting a roadside sign and a raised landscape feature, FHP said.

Both drivers, including the officer, a 23-year-old man, were brought to a local hospital with serious injuries, FHP said.

Charges are pending against the car’s driver.
