The interesting op-ed from the Daily Signal by Victor Joecks in Part I raises several interesting questions, including the notion: what is truth? For anyone seriously exposed to the Christian Bible, it is a familiar question. To set the table for Joeck's op-ed, MHProNews asked left-leaning Google's artificial intelligence powered Gemini to lay out some facts about a historic look at the timeless question: what is truth?

As a tip for those who are using AI, how the input-inquiry is framed is very important, as AI itself has said. With that in mind, here was the question posed to Gemini by yours truly, followed by Gemini's response. Note that Gemini's response also sheds light on the man known as Jesus of Nazareth.

The existence and role of Pontius Pilate as the Roman prefect of Judea (c. 26–36 CE) are well-substantiated outside of the Bible through historical writings and archaeological evidence.

The Pilate Stone (Archaeological): Discovered in 1961 at the ancient theater in Caesarea Maritima, this limestone block fragment is inscribed with a dedication to the Emperor Tiberius and explicitly names "[Po]ntius Pilatus, [Praef]ectus IUDA[EA]E" (Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea). This is the only surviving archaeological evidence that directly names him and confirms his official title as "Prefect."
Josephus (Historical Writer): The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus (c. 37–100 CE) recounts several incidents of Pilate's governorship in his works, The Jewish War and Jewish Antiquities. These accounts portray Pilate as a cruel and heavy-handed ruler who frequently clashed with the Jewish population, notably by using Temple funds to build an aqueduct and by deploying troops to massacre Samaritans.
Tacitus (Roman Historian): The Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus (c. 56–120 CE) mentions Pilate in his Annals (Book 15.44). While discussing Emperor Nero's persecution of Christians, Tacitus states that the founder of the name, "Christus," was executed by the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius.
Philo of Alexandria (Contemporary Writer): The Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria (c. 20 BCE – 50 CE) describes Pilate's ruthlessness in his work, Embassy to Gaius, mentioning his corruption, violence, and executions without proper trials.

The Question: "What is Truth?" (Quid est Veritas?)

Pilate's infamous question, "What is truth?" (Quid est veritas? in Latin, though the exchange was likely in Greek), is recorded in the Gospel of John (18:38).

Context: Jesus had just stated, "For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."
Interpretation: Pilate's question is often interpreted not as a sincere philosophical inquiry, but as a cynical, rhetorical dismissal of the entire concept, reflecting a Roman official's pragmatic worldview. Having dealt with various local religious and political factions for years, Pilate likely viewed "truth" as an abstract, irrelevant concept compared to the tangible political reality of maintaining Roman order and preventing riots. The Gospel narrative emphasizes the profound irony: the Roman judge, who embodies political power, stands face-to-face with a man who claimed to be the Truth, yet dismissively turns away without waiting for an answer.

The Paradox of Verdict and Action

The most striking contradiction in the trial accounts is the gulf between Pilate's verdict of innocence and his actions:

The Verdict ("No Crime"): Pilate publicly declared three times (in the Gospel of John) that he found “no fault” or “no crime” in Jesus. According to Roman law and his own judgment, Jesus had committed no act of sedition or treason against the Roman Empire.
The Scourging: Despite this clear verdict of innocence, Pilate first ordered Jesus to be scourged—a brutal, often lethal Roman flogging—in an attempt to satisfy the crowd and the Jewish authorities and thereby release Jesus. This act was a severe miscarriage of justice, punishing a man he had just declared innocent.
The Crucifixion: When the crowd, instigated by the chief priests, rejected the scourged man and threatened Pilate by saying that sparing Jesus would mean he was "not Caesar's friend" (a charge of disloyalty to the Emperor Tiberius), Pilate conceded. Prioritizing political stability and his own career over justice, he formally delivered Jesus for crucifixion, the most humiliating and torturous form of Roman execution reserved for rebels and enemies of the state. He famously performed a symbolic hand-washing ritual to declare his own innocence, yet he alone possessed the legal authority to order the execution.

Americans don’t just disagree on policies. In three key areas, they disagree on the principles that lead to the creation of those policies.

The first is truth. Some people believe that absolute truth exists—a shared reality outside of ourselves. We may not like the truth, but attempting to deny it will only cause confusion, frustration, and failure. Others believe that truth is relative. Priority should be given to one’s lived experience and what individuals believe to be true.

The debate where this is most obvious concerns sex. Either sex is based on biological reality or personal feelings. The former is objective and observable. The latter is subjective and self-selected.

But this isn’t just a personal choice. It permeates societal disputes about pronouns, sports, locker rooms, and surgeries. In some places, biological men are housed in women’s prisons. Unsurprisingly, that has resulted in some of those men raping female prisoners. But the Left doesn’t care about those “lived experiences.”

The second is American values. The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

America hasn’t always lived up to this aspiration. Leaders like Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t call for the country to adopt new values. They pointed out the country’s shortcomings and urged America to live up to her ideals. That approach worked. Racial discrimination is largely illegal, although some leftist institutions continue to seek ways to enact de facto affirmative action schemes.

But judging people by their character, not their skin color, isn’t universally celebrated these days. Critical race theory adherents don’t support neutral principles applied to individuals. They want to divide people by skin color. Then, they want the government to cram down homogeneous outcomes for each racial group. That’s the antithesis of protecting individual rights and judging people based on their merits.

The third is God. The country was settled by colonists who held Judeo-Christian values. This is why numerous state constitutions once required elected officials to be Christians. The Founding Fathers weren’t shocked by this overt connection between politics and religion—they were counting on it.
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other,” John Adams wrote in 1798. He was the sitting president at the time.

This is because limited government requires self-governance among the populace. Widespread belief in a God who judges individual actions and desires, Judeo-Christian morality has long been an indispensable part of that in America.

How things have changed over the last century. The Supreme Court kicked God out of schools. This didn’t make public schools neutral. Something was going to fill the values vacuum. Schools now preach secular humanism, which functions like a religion for atheists. The number of Americans who believe in God has fallen noticeably since then.

These principles are so foundational that even uneasy compromises won’t remain stable in the long run. Either one side or the other will emerge victorious in these debates.

Look throughout human history. Profound disagreements like these have usually been settled with conquest and force, not logic and rhetoric. Preventing that from happening here requires zero tolerance for political violence, not celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination or protecting Antifa.
These disputes don’t make the headlines. But they are why our politics are so bitter and divisive.
