What President Trump can do to Fix Economy and Boost Wealth Creation

The Center Square supplied in Part I of this article for today. My impression in the past year is that they seem to aim for balance and accuracy. That said, they fail to mention that President Donald J. Trump (R) is polling ahead of where President Barack Obama (D) did at a similar time in his second term. That's not a slam, just an additional piece of information that goes beyond their poll results.

That said, both things can be true. The Center Square poll follows. What President Trump, either, or both major parties can do to economically fix what's going wrong will follow in Part II. Other topics will be included in Part III.

The Center Square Voters' Voice Poll
Trump losing ground on economy, poll finds

(The Center Square) – Donald Trump rode a poor economy back to the White House during his 2024 campaign, but seven months into his second term, most voters aren't seeing what they want.

The Center Square Voters' Voice Poll, conducted by Noble Predictive Insights, surveyed 2,565 registered voters from Oct. 2-6, 2025, via opt-in online panel and text-to-web cell phone messages. The poll found that 51% of voters disapproved or strongly disapproved of Trump's handling of the U.S. economy. About 47% of voters approve or strongly approve of Trump's handling of the economy. About 3% of voters said they weren't sure.

Republicans were more likely to view Trump's economic record favorably. About 80% of Republican voters said they approved of Trump's economy. However, Democrats and independents don't see it that way. Among Democrats, 83% disapprove. Among independents, 57% disapprove.

Income level also affected the results. People with more money were more likely to view Trump's handling of the economy positively. Among registered voters with less than $50,000 in household income, Trump's economic approval rating was 39%. Among voters with household incomes between $50,000 and $100,000, that approval rating climbed to 46%, while 59% of households earning more than $100,000 viewed Trump's handling of the economy favorably.

Trump's overall approval is now directly connected to his economic approval, said Mike Noble, founder and CEO of Noble Predictive Insights. That's a change from Trump's first term, but similar to how voters felt in April when The Center Square asked the same question.

"Not only is he tethered to it, it's actually dragging him down a little bit more," Noble told The Center Square. "I think that is a worrisome thing, especially going into the midterms."

Trump has spent much of the past seven months pressuring the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates while rolling out the highest import duties America has faced in nearly a century. Trump used tariffs to overhaul global trade in favor of U.S. firms, but consumers have seen little relief on prices. Trump has said he wants to use tariffs to bring back manufacturing jobs, shift away from income taxes and pay down the nation's $37.8 trillion in debt.

The Federal Reserve lowered benchmark interest rates by a quarter point last month. Trump wants to cut them by multiple points.

Trump's tariff rollout has also frustrated both businesses and consumers. Some of the world's top retailers, including Walmart and Home Depot, have publicly said that they have raised prices to cover the costs of tariffs. Trump has called on large companies to absorb the loss without raising prices.
A recent report from Goldman Sachs estimated that consumers would pay 55% of the cost of tariffs. The White House has pushed back on that and similar claims.

"The President and Administration's position has always been clear: while Americans may face a transition period from tariffs upending a broken status quo that has put America Last, the cost of tariffs will ultimately be borne by foreign exporters," White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement. "Companies are already shifting and diversifying their supply chains in response to tariffs, including by onshoring production to the United States. Americans can rest assured that the Administration will continue to deliver economic relief from Joe Biden's inflation crisis while laying the groundwork for a long-term restoration of American Greatness."

The poll sample included 2,565 respondents, comprised of 978 Republicans, 948 Democrats, and 262 True Independents, which Noble Predictive refers to as independents who, when asked if they leaned toward one of the major parties, chose neither.

The poll weighted each party – Republicans, Democrats, and True Independents – independently.

The margin of error was 2%.

Part II

Yours truly is anti-corruption, including corrupt and evidence of predatory practices in the manufactured housing industry which often include members of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). Someone can reasonably be for manufactured housing done properly and still be against those who do manufactured housing improperly.

That said, the lack of affordable housing in the U.S. is costing the U.S. economy some $2 trillion dollars annually. Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (RI-D), the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), and the controversial McKinsey consulting firm are among those who have asserted the $2 trillion dollar economic annual drag on the U.S. economy caused by a lack of affordable housing.

A quick segue will illustrate how MHI sometimes operates.

The following is a video with 20 seconds of disclaimers at the start. MHI produced the video, which is high quality and features lawmakers from both major parties praising modern manufactured homes as a necessary solution to the affordable housing crisis. However, MHI has this essentially hidden on their own website. Per a fact-check by several AI systems, MHI has not promoted this video on social media, via a press release or elsewhere. Restated, they appear to act like a normal trade group if someone is superficially looking at them. It is when they are more carefully examined that the problems they are associated with come to light.

The report linked here and below challenges MHI's board and senior staff leadership to force a correction of the flawed ROAD to Housing Act 2025 bill, which is currently attached to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). It may be that the only reason that this is stalled is because of the partial shutdown. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (LA-R) has said he won't re-open the House until the shutdown is resolved in the Senate. The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR, unlike MHI, has avoided the kinds of scandals that have dogged several (not all) involved at MHI for much of the 21st century. MHARR has made it clear to both the House and Senate that the ROAD to Housing Act can be fixed with some modest but important language fixes. MHARR has called on President Trump, Democratic and Republican leaders to take the proper action.

MHI board and senior staff leaders have been urged earlier today to do their jobs. Namely, make sure that the language fixes that MHARR has called for are attached to that bill. If MHI fails to do so, those who hold stocks in several MHI member companies may concern that those stocks are vulnerable. See the report linked above or here for details. MHProNews will monitor and report as warranted by MHI leadership action, or inaction.

But regardless of what MHI does, or fails to do, elected officials are supposed to represent the intrests of We the People. President Trump, and leaders of both major parties, could give the economy a two trillion dollar economic boost by simply allowing existing federal laws to be fully and robustly enforced and then let the free market work without taxpayer subsidies.

If the Trump team (or Democrats, or Congressional Republicans) want to boost the economy, unleash the need for more affordable housing. Let the free market do its job.
