Only Certain Tires, Paints Will Be Accepted At Lakeland's Weekend Disposal Event

LAKELAND, FL — The city of Lakeland is hosting "Disposal Event" Saturday where residents can throw away household hazardous waste and electronics, the Polk County website said.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website, hazardous waste recycling helps prevent environmental hazards, protects scarce natural resources, provides economic benefits and reduces the nation's resilience on raw materials and energy.

The county has provided a list below of what's acceptable to dispose of at the city event.

Chemicals

  • Automotive fluids, motor oil
  • Batteries (household or auto)
  • Cleaners
  • Cooking oil
  • Fertilizers
  • Fluorescent bulbs and other mercury-containing devices
  • Fuels (Kerosene, gasoline)
  • Fungicides
  • Herbicides
  • Insecticides
  • Paint (latex, oil)
  • Paint thinner
  • Paint remover
  • Pesticides
  • Pool chemicals
  • Propane tanks
  • Solvents
  • Wood preservatives

Electronics

Limit up to five per household

  • TVs, VCRs, CD, DVD or Blu-ray players
  • Digital camera, video cameras (camcorders)
  • Cell phones, smart phones, MP3 players, iPods
  • Computers and/or peripherals

  • GPS, marine depth finders
  • Radios, stereo equipment
  • Telephones
  • Video game players

Tires

Limit up to 24 per vehicle

  • No off-road, tractor, floater/floating semi tires or tracks will be accepted.
  • Tires from businesses, independent or commercial trucking companies or automotive business will not be accepted.

Saturday's event starts 8 a.m. to noon, Lakeland Solid Waste Parking Lot, 605 Evelyn Ave., Lakeland
