"Interest in generative AI tools has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, coinciding with the release of OpenAI’s groundbreaking chatbot, ChatGPT," according to Visual Capitalist that produced the graphic below.

"While new players have been entering the generative AI space, there are clear leaders when it comes to general popularity. This graphic shows the 15 most popular generative AI tools based on web traffic in March 2024."

The data comes from a World Bank policy research working paper titled “Who on Earth is Using Generative AI?” by Yan Liu and He Wang," according to that same source.

On MHProNews.com, we have been doing tests with Microsoft Bing's AI powered Copilot since May 2023. Bing's Copilot and Google's Gemini both lean left, as does many in mainstream 'major' media.

Something similar can be said about legacy or mainstream media. For years, MHProNews and our MHLivingNews sister site have been using a graphic like the updated one below to help readers discern a possible agenda behind an information source.

MHProNews would note that the Drudge Report and Fox have both moved more toward the left in in their news (vs. punditry) recent years. It would also be MHProNews' take that MarketWatch, Reuters, and Newsweek each tend to be more left than center.

Back to AI, while ChatGPT is the most popular, when MHProNews/MHLivingNews began to do our tests with Copilot, we did so based on third-party research that routinely showed Copilot as the highest rated. For example, consider these items that support that notion based on a screen grab on this date using Google's search.

While younger people are naturally attracted to AI chat tools, people of all ages have or are using tools like Google's Gemini and Bing's Copilot. It is common to see a caution posted on these tools that says results should be double checked. That is one of the things that, in our view, makes Copilot useful if someone keeps in mind its left-leaning bias. At least the reader/user can see where the information comes from and can then discern how reliable or accurate that source information is.

According to left-leaning Wikipedia, the book and film "Manufacturing Consent" helps explain why it is important to understand media or source bias. "The film presents and illustrates [Noam] Chomsky and [Edward] Herman's propaganda model thesis that corporate media, as profit-driven institutions, tend to serve and further the agendas and interests of dominant, elite groups in the society. Some of our previous posts on how information is used to "manufacture" the "consent of the governed" are found in the prior posts in this series on the Patch.
