Former Inmate Earns Ethics Award

After serving more than 20 years in prison, the Land O' Lakes man was honored by the Rotary Club of Land O' Lakes for his mission to help local youth "self-improve."

Slyvester Peoples recently was awarded the Rotary Club of Land O’ Lakes 2nd Annual Ethics Award from former club president Curt Zeigler. "This award was bestowed on Slyvester for his dedication to helping youth self-improve," according to a media release.

Peoples served more than 20 years in a Florida prison after being convicted of murder when he was 24 years old, the release stated.Β  "During his time in prison, he learned to read and write, and how to influence his fellow inmates not to go back to crime. Brought up in a religious family, Sly relied heavily on Bible teachings to turn his life around," according to the release.

Today, Peoples, a Hungry Harry's BBQ employee, shares his story with youth groups, telling children what prison is like and sharing ways to stay out of trouble.
