LARGO, FL — During Tuesday night’s Largo City Commission meeting, the Largo Police Department was recognized with a proclamation declaring October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Deputy Chief Mike Loux introduced city commissioners to the newest victim advocate, Alexis Singh, and Frieda Widera, the long-standing victim advocate, shared sobering statistics about domestic violence and how everyone can be a part of the solution.

"One in four women and one in 10 men experience sexual violence, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime," Widera said. "In the United States, on average, someone experiences partner violence every minute and this equates to more than 10 million victims annually. These statistics tell us there are victims or survivors in this room."
