Each year, Largo presents eagle statues to a couple Largo City employees who have served in the military as a part of its annual Veterans Day Ceremony in Largo Central Park.

This year the city also included the family of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Matt Sitton in the presentation of the eagle statues. Sitton's parents, widow and toddler son attended the ceremony.

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and marked the first anniversary of the end of World War I. The national holiday began in 1938 and the holiday became known as Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day honors all who have served in the military.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11, but because the holiday fell on a Sunday this year, some government offices commemorate the holiday on Monday, Nov. 12.
